For the past forty-nine years,
the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association has played host to one of
most exciting amateur sporting events in British Columbia.
Bantam “AAA” and “AA” teams from throughout the Province, from
across Canada and the United States and from Europe, have come
together in the spirit of competition and sportsmanship to
participate in our Burnaby Bantam Christmas Tournament.
This year again sees sixteen top teams
putting in five days of intense competition starting on December
27th and culminating with our Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal
Championship on December 31st, as we count down toward the New
Year! This event helps support a hockey organization which has
been a part of the British Columbia minor hockey scene since 1964
and who has played a positive role in our game both on and off the
ice for over four decades. In order to salute the contribution
that various individuals have made to amateur hockey in Burnaby
over these many years, our Tournament conferences, divisions and
awards are named for some of the "builders" who
dedicated countless hours to their sport.
Many players who have gone on
to the National Hockey League, including Burnaby's own JOE SAKIC, RYAN WALTER and
GLEN ANDERSON, have proudly sported the Maroon and White of
Burnaby M.H.A. for this event.
This past tournament was again very successful and saw
the Cloverdale Colts capture the Gold Championship with an
exciting 6-3 win over the North Shore Winter Club
Winterhawks. In the Bronze Medal game, the Semiahmoo Ravens
captured third place with a 5-3 victory over the Seafair
Islanders.
In 2012,
we’ll be marking the 50th Anniversary of the Burnaby
Bantam Christmas Tournament and we’re already planning
for a very special celebration!
The action starts at 8:00 am on Thursday December 27th,
with round robin games for the first two days, elimination
playoffs on Saturday, December 29th, quarter final and semi
finals on Sunday, December 30th and Championship Finals on
Monday, December 31. The Bronze Championship goes at 9:00
am followed by the Gold/Silver Championship Final at 12:00
noon. All games are being played at the Bill Copeland Sports
Centre, 3676 Kensington Avenue in Burnaby's Central Valley
area.
